History of Arpoador
To talk about Arpoador is to talk about an old passion. That’s because it has always been a hotspot for locals.
Firstly, until the 1940s, Arpoador was popular with those who were looking for the perfect spot for fishing. In addition, the very name Arpoador comes from the fishing influence, as the rock was the main point for “harpooning” whales. Another curiosity is that the Arpoador rock itself is shaped like a whale.
From the 1960s on, the place became a meeting place mainly for surfers and young people, who became influential figures in Rio de Janeiro’s cultural scene. In the surfing area, for example, legends of the sport began training and competing, such as Daniel Friedman, Pepê and Bocão.
In addition to these, some famous names from the neighborhood include Ira Etz, Arduíno Colasanti, artists and composers such as Tom Jobim, Vinícius de Moraes and João Gilberto, who used the setting as inspiration for their songs.
Curiosities of Arpoador
- Until 1940, the Arpoador neighborhood was a sandy desert;
- The Circo Voador concert hall was in Arpoador in the 1980s;
- In the 1960s, people used to meet on the edge of Arpoador beach in their VW Beetles to date, a habit that became known as the submarine race;
- Surprisingly, the bikini was first worn on Arpoador beach in 1948 by the German Miriam Etz, mother of Ira Etz, who sewed her own ‘two-piece swimsuits’.

Arpoador Rock
First of all, the natural beauty of Arpoador is enchanting by itself. And from Pedra do Arpoador you have a really privileged spot to watch the sunset, a memorable scene with Dois Irmãos Hill and Gávea Rock in the background.
The scene is applauded by spectators every day. This tradition was started by journalist Carlos Leonam, who has been known in the area since the 1960s, as a way of saying thank you for the natural spectacle of renewing one’s breath and saying a goodbye to the sun until the next day.
Arpoador Beach
With a length of around 800 meters, the beach is an attraction for people of different tastes.
Those who enjoy practicing sports will find themselves at various points on Arpoador Beach. Activities such as volleyball, the famous “altinha”, surfing and walking along the shore are common.

Praia do Diabo (Devil’s Beach)

Also, on the left side of the beach, there is a very traditional popular gym in the neighborhood, known as Flintstones Academy, often crowded with people of all ages working out. The gym has the proposal of being natural, formed by stone, cement and iron scrap equipment, in addition to being outdoors and completely free!
The beach is next to Arpoador Beach and is between Pedra do Arpoador and Forte de Copacabana. Its small strip of sand enchants everyone with its beauty!
Garota de Ipanema Park
Just a few steps from Arpoador Rock, you’ll find Garota de Ipanema Park, the perfect place to enjoy with the whole family. The park has a playground, a viewpoint overlooking the beach, and is the stage for several free shows that take place throughout the city.
