Arpoador Rock in Rio de Janeiro

After choosing Rio de Janeiro as your travel destination, it’s time to think about how your days in the wonderful city will be spent. And one thing’s for sure: Rio is full of unmissable sights that delight visitors from all over the world.

But with so many wonders to see, it can be a bit difficult to know where to start! That’s why we’ve prepared this blogpost as a guide to one of Rio’s most iconic landmarks – the Arpoador Rock.

The Arpoador Rock is one of Cariocas’ oldest passions. Until the 1940s, the spot was often frequented by fishermen. The name ‘Arpoador’ comes from the fishing influence, since the rock was the main point for harpooning whales. Another curiosity is that the Arpoador rock itself is shaped like a whale. Had you ever thought of that?

From the 1960s and 1970s onwards, Arpoador became a meeting point for surfers. Considered the cradle of Brazilian surfing, it was there that the sport’s legends began their training and competed for iconic prizes. Some of the neighborhood’s famous names are Daniel Friedman, Pepê and Bocão. To this day, the place is visited by hundreds of locals and visitors every day, whether it’s for surf schools, for the views or for the surf pros who come to catch a wave!

How to get to Arpoador Rock?

Arpoador Rock is located between Ipanema and Copacabana beaches and is easily accessible to those arriving from different parts of the city.

First of all, for those who want to make the most of the incredible views of the beach and feel the breeze coming from there at all times, we recommend a walk along the beach to the spot or a bike ride along the cycle path along Vieira Souto Avenue. The tourist attraction is just past Posto 8 on Ipanema Beach and from Posto 7 you can already see the spectacular rock formations stretching out into the sea.

There is also the General Osório metro station just a few minutes away, as well as access to bus lines that connect several points in the city.

But what to do once you get there?

Sunset at Arpoador Rock

One of the biggest attractions for visitors is the stunning view the place offers, especially at sunset. From there you can contemplate the sunset, composing an incredible scene with Morro Dois Irmãos in the background.

An experience worthy of applause! And that’s what happens every evening there. This simple gesture that has become a tradition in Ipanema was started by journalist Carlos Leonam, who has been known in the area since the 60s.

During one of those sunny summer weekdays around 1968 and 1969, the atmosphere was lively, the sky was clear and the sun was setting behind the Tijucas Islands. Facing such a scenario, a voice came up: “Guys, let’s clap. After a day like this, we can only be grateful.”

Since days like this are repeated every day on Arpoador Beach, locals and visitors keep up the tradition and applaud the spectacle of the sunset!

But the attractions don’t stop there. In the surroundings of Arpoador Rock you’ll still find several options for places that will improve your experience. Take a look.

arp bar

To make your visit to the Arpoador Rock even more special, the arp bar is the ideal restaurant, as it is located just a few steps from Arpoador Beach, on the first floor of the Hotel Arpoador.

The restaurant is a privileged spot to watch the sunset. Tables on the esplanade, which is the beach promenade, and on the balcony are the perfect place to relax and be dazzled by the scenery.

Experience also includes fresh cocktails, as well as starters, dishes and desserts that showcase the best of coastal cuisine.

Hotel Arpoador

When it comes to privileged views, the Hotel Arpoador is the perfect accommodation choice for those who want to be just a few steps away from the Arpoador Rock. Every detail has been planned so you can enjoy an authentic Carioca experience both inside and outside our hotel. The Arpoador offers a sophisticated simplicity and the encounter between nature and the urban, providing a unique stay by the sea. Exclusive beach service, yoga on the terrace and the Maré Spa are just some of the benefits guests can enjoy!

Praia do Diabo (Devil’s Beach)

Neighboring Arpoador Beach, Praia do Diabo (Devil’s Beach) lies between Arpoador Rock and Copacabana Fort. And despite its small strip of sand, it enchants everyone with its beauty.

The beach gets its name from the strong waves that often prevent bathers from entering. But don’t get carried away! The place is occupied daily by people looking for a place to exercise, play various games and, of course, enjoy the wonderful scenery.

Still on the left side of the beach, there is a very traditional gym popular in the neighborhood, known as the Flintstones Academy, which is often packed with people of all ages exercising. The gym is mainly natural, with equipment made from stones, cement and scrap iron, as well as being outdoors and completely free!

Garota de Ipanema Park

Besides being a way to get to the sands of the beach, Garota de Ipanema Park is also an unmissable stop to get to know the surroundings of the Arpoador Rock.

That’s because the space is ideal for practicing lots of sports, walking, cycling, meditation and many other activities.

Named after the song “Garota de Ipanema” by Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, the park is a great place to take the kids and the perfect post-beach break! The musical arena is also the stage for several concerts right by the sea.

Anyway, after all these tips, it’s clear that the Arpoador Rock is an iconic tourist spot and the doorway into falling in love with Rio de Janeiro. Come and enjoy an authentic Carioca experience!
